A landmark International Masterclass in Advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopy was successfully conducted on 13 and 14 August 2026 at the Professorial Unit Auditorium and Operating Theatre, Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura, as a pre-congress workshop of the 59th Annual Academic Congress of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SLCOG).
This event marked an important milestone, as it was the first SLCOG gynaecological laparoscopy workshop to be conducted in Anuradhapura. It was also the first two-day laparoscopy workshop in the history of SLCOG, as previous workshops had been limited to a single day.
The workshop was jointly organized by SLCOG and the Rajarata Gynaecological Endoscopy Centre (RaGEC). RaGEC made a major contribution to hosting and coordinating this nationally important academic event, including the provision of clinical facilities, operating-theatre support, academic coordination and local logistical arrangements.
The scientific programme included advanced live surgical demonstrations, expert lectures, video-based discussions and interactive sessions. Three distinguished international experts, together with several leading Sri Lankan specialists in gynaecological endoscopy, participated as members of the faculty and shared their expertise with the participants.
The event was led by Professor Kumara Dissanayake of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka’s first Professor in Gynaecological Endoscopy, demonstrating the academic and clinical leadership of Rajarata University in advancing minimally invasive gynaecological surgery in the country.
The masterclass was conducted with exceptional success and extensive participation, attracting a large number of consultants, postgraduate trainees and other medical professionals. The successful organization of this historic event has further strengthened the national and international recognition of the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura and RaGEC as emerging centres of excellence in advanced gynaecological endoscopy, surgical education and professional training.
