FMAS Presents Human Leptospira Isolation at the International Leptospirosis SocietyScientific Meeting 2026

Dr. Dinesha Jayasundara, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, delivered a talk on the Faculty’s journey in human Leptospira isolation at the International Leptospirosis Society (ILS) Scientific Meeting 2026, hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The talk was part of the pre-conference workshop on 26 October 2026, Advances in Laboratory Methods for Leptospirosis: From Isolation to Genomic Analysis. Dr. Jayasundara presented in the session on isolation from human clinical samples, alongside Dr. Paula Ristow and Dr. Hans van der Linden of the Expertise Centre for Leptospirosis, Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, Amsterdam University Medical Centre, The Netherlands.

The presentation reflected the work behind establishing human Leptospira isolation from the ground up: developing laboratory capacity, overcoming practical challenges, and making isolation a realistic and sustainable part of the Faculty’s leptospirosis research.

Presenting this work on an international platform alongside leading reference centres is a proud moment for the Faculty and recognises the effort of everyone who contributed. FMAS remains committed to strengthening research capacity in infectious diseases of national and regional importance.
