Saubhagya Students’ Scholarship Scheme
Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka
The Saubhagya Students’ Scholarship Scheme (SSSS), inaugurated in the year 2010 at the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences (FMAS), Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL), stands as a steadfast pillar of financial support for medical undergraduates who encounter obstacles to thrive at university education due to financial constraints.
The core mission of the SSSS is to establish a network of diverse stakeholders, unified by the overarching objective of enhancing the educational calibre of medical undergraduates at the Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka through the provision of financial support. Therefore, SSSS manages the systematic allocation of scholarships to meritorious medical undergraduates who are engaged in their academic pursuits at FMAS RUSL and face significant financial hardship.
The process of identifying recipients of the SSSS entails a meticulous selection procedure including a detailed application procedure, face-to-face interviews with a panel of academics and final adjudication by the Faculty Scholarships Committee. The SSSS caters to students who find themselves on the periphery of existing national financial assistance schemes such as Mahapola and Bursary Assistance, as well as those who, despite availing themselves of Mahapola or Bursary aid, still face severe economic hardship and essentially require supplementary financial support due to the severe economic troubles in their homes.
Exemplifying resilience and efficacy, the SSSS has not only endured but thrived to support undergraduate students of FMAS for more than a decade which is a testimony to its sustainability. The tangible outcomes of the programme include the prevention of potential attrition caused by economic hardships and the excellent results of the recipients of the scholarship.
In a call to action, we extend a warm invitation to individuals of benevolent disposition, entreating them to contribute as sponsors. In accordance with the norm, the SSSS grants a monthly scholarship amount of Rs. 5000.00 to eligible beneficiaries.
The avenue through which sponsors may channel their contributions is threefold:
- Provision of one-time or recurrent monthly standing orders to the designated FMAS bank account, thereby enabling the transfer of funds to the student’s accounts under the administration of the SSSS committee
- Direct monthly standing orders to the bank accounts of chosen students for varying durations, spanning from one to two years or until their graduation
- Facilitation of individual donations, tailored to address specific and immediate financial needs of students in dire straits including but not limited to requisites such as footwear, medical books, stationary, and medical instruments
The SSSS is a tapestry woven by collective benevolence, illuminating the path towards equitable medical education for aspiring minds at FMAS RUSL.
