Three special short courses for elective students:

The Faculty of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, conducts special short courses for elective students twice a year on mental health and self-harm, tropical diseases, and their management, and community-based primary health care and primary care

  1. Mental health and self-harm (Duration 2 weeks)

This short course includes;

  • Seminar/Workshops on mental health national and regional mental health burden and mental health services in Sri Lanka
  • Seminars/Workshops on the national and regional burden of deliberate self-harm and substance misuse
  • Seminars/Workshops and field visits on community-based interventions to prevent deliberate self-harm and substance misuse.
  • Meeting and discussions with community-based organizations, research organizations and non-governmental organization members and activists on deliberate self-harm and substance misuse prevention and field visits to observe community-based interventions
  • Field visits to observe psychiatry community-based preventive and curative services.
  • Field visits to observe intermediate psychiatry units and rehabilitation centres
  • Visit to forensic medicine museum
  • Visit the teaching hospital, meet and discuss with healthcare professionals, and observe the management process
  1. Tropical diseases and their management (Duration 2 weeks)

This short course includes;

  • Seminars/Workshops on the Sri Lankan health care system
  • Seminars/Workshops on the national and regional burden of snakebites and other insect bites
  • Seminars/Workshops on the national and regional burden of neglected tropical diseases (i.e. dengue, malaria, filariasis, leptospirosis, leishmaniasis, tuberculosis, leprosy, etc.)
  • Meeting and discussions with leading research teams (runs with international collaborations) on snakebite and neglected tropical disease management
  • Field visits to observe tertiary care, secondary care and primary care healthcare institutions
  • Field visit to meet and discuss with traditional practitioners caring for patients presenting following snakebite
  • Visit to snake museum and clinical pathology museum
  • Visit to observe an Ayurvedic hospital
  • Visit the teaching hospital, meet and discuss with healthcare professionals, and observe the management process
  1. Community-based primary health care and primary care (Duration 2 weeks)

This short course includes;

  • Seminars/Workshops on Sri Lankan primary health care system
  • Seminars/Workshops on the national and regional burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases and epidemiological transition
  • Seminars/Workshops on community-based maternal and child health programme
  • Field visits to observe primary health care structure, infrastructure facilities and services
  • Meeting and discussions with community-based primary health care team members.
  • Field visits to observe primary care institutions
  • Visit to observe Ayurvedic community-based preventive services
  • Visit the teaching hospital and peripheral hospital Out Patient Department (OPD), meet and discuss with healthcare professionals, and observe the management process

Furthermore, the FMAS, RUSL is planning to introduce a new short course on Ayurvedic and Traditional Medicine.
