Department of Medicine is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in clinical medicine and offers medical services at the University Medical Unit, Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura. It also carries out research, public engagement and advocacy. The department offices and its clinical services (wards 61 and 62) are both situated at the newly constructed six storied professorial clinical building at the Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura. Clinical services and the research lab are situated in the first floor and the department offices are situated in the second floor.
The Teaching hospital Anuradhapura is situated at a unique geographical location, Anuradhapura, where a rich history of more than 2500 years lies with many archeological sites and specimens including that of ancient medical heritage. This UNESCO world heritage site was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 4th century BC until the beginning of the 11th century AD. During this period it remained one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia.
