About AMA

Anuradhapura Medical Association (AMA) – Who We are

The Anuradhapura Medical Association (AMA) stands as a testament to the region’s profound connection to the rich cultural and historical legacy of Sri Lanka’s ancient medical traditions. Rooted in the heart of Anuradhapura, a city renowned for its centuries-old heritage, the AMA draws inspiration from the pioneering medical practices established during the Anuradhapura Kingdom. A particularly striking chapter of this legacy is the Mihintale Hospital built by king Sena II, believed to be one of the world’s earliest known hospitals, dating back to 853-887 A.D era.

Situated near the sacred site of Mihintale, the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, this ancient hospital embodies the seamless integration of healthcare and spirituality. With meticulously planned stone structures, evidence of advanced surgical tools, and provisions for holistic healing, the Mihintale Hospital highlights the profound emphasis placed on human well-being in ancient Sri Lankan society.

As a modern organization, the AMA honors this legacy by fostering excellence in healthcare, education, and community service.

Our mission is to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in medicine while nurturing the values of empathy and dedication that lie at the heart of healthcare. AMA is dedicated to uniting medical professionals in the region to advance healthcare standards, foster collaboration, promote professional growth, and serve the community with compassion and integrity. Through academic programs, research, professional development opportunities, and community outreach initiatives, the AMA strives to create a platform for continuous learning and meaningful engagement among its members.

Drawing inspiration from the ingenuity and compassion of its ancestors, the association seeks to uphold the region’s historical commitment to healing and well-being, blending ancient wisdom with modern advancements to serve the people of today.
